Government releases source code of Aarogya Setu Android app on GitHub
NEW DELHI: The government has released the source code of Aarogya Setu Android app on GitHub. The developer community can review the source code of India’s COVID-19 contact-tracing app and understand how the entire process works and what personal information is processed through the app. The source code of iOS version of the app will be released within the next two weeks along with the server code. The app has been officially developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under guidance of NIC.
The Aarogya Setu app is also available on iOS, KaiOS (for JioPhone) and even in the IVRS form, which enables feature phone and landline users to register on the platform. Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) secretary Ajay Prakash Sawhney said during a press conference that 98% users of Aarogya Setu are on Android and thus, the source code for the Android app is being released first. “Going forward, the source code for iOS and KaiOS apps would be released as well,” he said.
He stressed that the Aarogya Setu app is entirely based on the self assessment of users and that no phone number or patient name is stored or shared with anyone. “The app exchanges anonymous device ID and the data resides on the phone itself,” he added.
Late last week, the terms of service and privacy policy of Aarogya Setu too were changed. Among other changes, the app will no longer suspend a user if he/she fails to comply with the terms of service of the app. The revised terms remove restrictions on tampering and reverse-engineering, and adds contact information in case a user wants to report a defect/false case.
According to the government, Aarogya Setu app has been downloaded by over 11 crore users across India. It was launched in April.
